The first round of Eudora educators included in Phase 2 received their COVID-19 vaccine this week, Eudora Schools Superintendent Steve Splichal said Thursday.
Twenty-four staff members from Eudora schools were vaccinated through a clinic set up by Lawrence-Douglas County Public Health on Wednesday. Another 24 individuals from the school district are anticipated to be vaccinated next week, though Splichal said he won’t know for sure until he receives a notice Saturday from the county.
“I’m very excited to see this moving forward,” Splichal said during Thursday’s School Board meeting. “I think it’s been something we’ve wanted to have happen for the longest time, and factors outside of our control just didn’t quite get those lined up.”
District leaders distributed a survey among its staff to get an idea of how many people were going to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. County health officials determined how many vaccines would be allotted for Eudora educators based off the 161 results received from the survey.
The allotment the district receives also depends on how many vaccines the county receives. On Wednesday, 1,185 vaccines were administered through a mass vaccination clinic at the Douglas County fairgrounds, according to a Facebook post from Lawrence-Douglas County Public Health.
“We’re just glad that that shot is getting into the arms of our staff,” Splichal said.
Lawrence-Douglas County Public Health also advised schools that it had moved back into the green phase, which indicates the trend of COVID-19 spread is low enough for schools to practice hybrid and in-person instruction with standard mitigation practices.
Splichal said Eudora schools would be returning for in-person instruction for most of next week, as long as there is no inclement weather.
Separately, the board also voted to approve the 2021-2022 academic calendar, with the first full day of school Aug. 13 for first to 12th graders. Kindergarteners will start Aug. 17 with a half-day of instruction.
