The boys basketball team opened the season Thursday with a loss to the Basehor-Linwood Bobcats.
The shots weren’t falling for the Cardinals early as the Bobcats built a 26-3 lead by the end of the first quarter.
The Cardinals shook off some off-season rust and brought in 18 points during the second quarter, but the Bobcats responded and never looked back with a final score of 77-46.
Cardinals coach Kyle Deterding said his team has some issues to fix, but he’s proud of the way his team never quit, especially facing a daunting task.
“After we got down by 20 in the first quarter, we competed a little better, but once you get down by 20 to a good team, there’s not much you can do. I thought the kids played hard, but we just didn’t play well. They’re a really good team,” he said.
He said his team will have to commit fewer turnovers and find a way to keep the opposing team in front of them on defense to be more successful throughout the season.
“We have lots to work on after this one,” he said.
The first quarter deficit was the tipping point for the Cardinals. In the second and third quarters the teams were even, with the Cardinals even outscoring the Bobcats by a point in the second quarter.
The Eudora boys will play host for a tournament next week. The Cardinals will try to get their first regular season win against Tonganoxie when the Chieftains come to town Dec. 19.
