Eudora varsity football lost its second game in a row at home to the St. James Academy Thunder on homecoming night.
The Cardinals improved on offense, scoring four rushing touchdowns after only putting up 6 points last week against Nemaha Central. Eudora kept the ball on the ground most of the game and running back Brayden Beerbower was the first Cardinal to find the end zone for a rushing touchdown.
On fourth down of their next possession Eudora quarterback Ezekiel Reazin broke free for a 52-yard rushing touchdown on a designed run early in the second quarter.
Running back Octavius Lyles rode the Cardinal momentum and scored a touchdown seconds before the first half ended. Both teams were trading blows as the Thunder continued to hold a double-digit lead 28-18.
However, the defense could not keep up with the explosive St. James offense, which scored on four consecutive drives to open the game. The streak was only broken when they got the ball back with only 17 seconds left before halftime following the Lyles touchdown.
“I feel like defensively we just need to be on our assignments, get it down and we’ll be fine,” Lyles said.
The Cardinals defensive woes continued in the second half. The Thunder scored on their first drive out of halftime. Later in the fourth quarter, St. James scored its final touchdown of the night on a 77-yard bomb.
Eudora remained scoreless in the second half until they rushed for a touchdown with 24 seconds left in the game to bring the final score to 42-24.
The Cardinals fall to 1-2 this season. Next up, Eudora will play at 7 p.m. Friday at Tonganoxie.
