The girls basketball team came to play this Thursday night, winning 53-39 against Basehor-Linwood.
The Cardinals hit a couple of 3-pointers and jumped out to an 8-0 lead. They would lead the whole game. The closest the Bobcats could get was a 6-point deficit in the second quarter, but the Cardinals kept them at bay. They would take a 10-point lead into halftime, 26-16.
The Cardinals made use of the 3-point shot, with three coming from Reagan Hiebert and another four from Harper Schreiner.
Riley Hiebert added one more for a total of eight 3-pointers for the team. The three girls combined to score 44 of the team’s points, led by Reagan Hiebert and Schreiner who each had 20 points for the Cardinals.
The Bobcats pressed during the game to try and get back into the competition, but the Cardinals were able to take it apart. They found the holes in the press, leading to some easy baskets.
The Bobcats cut the lead to 10 with 2:40 remaining in the game, but the Cardinals warded off the comeback attempt. The opening night of the regular season ended with a win.
Cardinals coach Richard Ebel said the team’s effort was what made the difference in the win.
“We told them it was going to be an effort game tonight. The execution when you only have 14 days of practice may not be great, but the effort ought to be great. I thought our effort was tremendous to start the game. It was hot in that gym, and we fought through it. Can’t say enough about our effort,” he said.
He said they were able to run the floor to wear the other team out, which lead to more open looks for 3-point shots and easy layups.
Ebel was happy with the team’s win, but he highlighted some areas the team will need to improve to get better for the rest of season.
“We need to work a little bit on decision-making and a little bit on our passing,” he said.
The Cardinals will try to continue their winning ways against the Tonganoxie Chieftains on Dec. 19 at home.
