The Eudora City Commission approved an ordinance regarding necessary public infrastructure improvements on Church Street for the Nottingham redevelopment project at its meeting Monday.

The ordinance approved the 2020-2025 capital improvement plan for future capital projects for Eudora, adding a $9 million request toward Nottingham infrastructure needs into the plan. The city also received about $1.3 million in grant funds from the Kansas Department of Transportation, which will also go toward the improvements.

This approval is the first step for the commission in the financing process for the Nottingham project. The first commercial project for the property, a Casey's General Store, was approved at a previous commission meeting Aug. 18 and can be viewed in the meeting's agenda.

The commission also discussed the Wakarusa Boat Ramp Restoration Project, which involves restoring native plants and vegetation at the Kansas River boat ramp. The Parks and Recreation department is partnering with the local environmental organization Friends of the Kaw and Native Lands, LLC to complete the project, and Eudora residents can volunteer to help as well. The project begins this fall, with the first volunteer community workday on Oct. 22, and is expected to conclude by spring 2022.

Courtney Masterson, an ecologist at Native Lands, LLC, said this project will create a public resource for members of the community to experience the type of natural areas they might normally be isolated from.

"It's really wonderful to be able to create stunning natural landscapes in public spaces where people can learn in front of an outdoor classroom-type space and then continue to enjoy it forever," Masterson said. "If we get this done right over the next two years, and I know we will, we're looking at an investment that's going to last a really long time."

The Eudora City Commission will next meet at 7 p.m. Sept. 14. Additional information and instructions for attending the meeting remotely will be posted to the city's website.
