The Eudora City Commission granted Eudora Public Schools a sign permit for a portable sign display in recognition of the graduating class of 2020 at its meeting Monday.

The sign will be displayed at 1402 Church St. from Thursday to Sunday and will display each graduate's name and photo in celebration of the Eudora High School seniors whose final senior activities were impacted by COVID-19.

Mayor Tim Reazin said he is glad to see this recognition of the Class of 2020 happening.

"As a parent of a senior, thank you," Reazin said. "It will be some way to recognize those kids."

The commission also discussed infrastructure improvements and costs surrounding the Nottingham property redevelopment project.

The current site plan for the Nottingham property includes improvements to Church Street, such as sidewalk improvements, turn lane improvements and an added traffic signal at the intersection of 15th and Church. Additional information about the existing plans for redevelopment of the property can be found here.

Reazin said the sidewalk improvements to Church Street are an important part of the first phase of the Nottingham project.

"For the safety and the sanity of everyone involved, I think it's better to have that as one project done," Reazin said. "The cost will be less if we do in it the initial phase rather than waiting five years and doing it. To have the intersection safer for me is important, and to have it done right the first time rather than wait and hope that we can have a commission in the future have the same vision and plan that we had."

City Manager Barack Matite said city staff will have further discussions with Casey's General Store as property owners to create a final development plan, including the added Church Street improvements.

"They know that the scope of work has expanded, and they know that we want to make improvements on Church Street, so we look forward to having a conversation with them to share with them that the City Commission is working toward that goal," Matite said.

The commission will next meet at 7 p.m. May 27, a date change to accommodate Memorial Day. Additional information will be found on the city's website.
