Cops, kids and cones: Eudora police connect with area students

BY RILEY WILSON

The feeling of summer continued for students in Eudora as they enjoyed ice cream with local law enforcement for the cone with a cop event Wednesday.

“I like getting ice cream. I also really like the cops in the Eudora community. They’re just really nice and kind,” said Eudora student Phoebe Fletcher.

Chief of Police Wes Lovett said the event allows the community to get to know them. He said he enjoys interacting with students in a positive environment.

“A lot of times, kids, their only involvement with the police can be negative, and I think being able to talk to them in this kind of environment, at school, in a positive setting just can bring a bit better image and connection between us and the kids,” Lovett said.

Students at the event asked questions, hugged the officers, joked with them and some even said they felt like friends.

“It feels good, ‘cause it feels like they kind of act with me about how, you know, they try to fit in and that’s good. Like it feels good when they kind of act as your friend and that’s pretty cool,” student Cage Crabill said.

This event is one of several community events the Police Department provides.
