Douglas County residents are asked not to leave home except for “essential needs” beginning at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday in an effort to stop the spread of the coronavirus.
Douglas County Health Officer Thomas Marcellino issued a “Stay at Home” order for the county, following in the steps of Kansas City metro counties including Jackson, Wyandotte and Johnson. Kansas has a total of 64 positive cases of the coronavirus as of Sunday evening.
“With full community cooperation, this proactive public health order can minimize the impact of COVID-19 on our Douglas County community,” Marcellino said in a statement.
The order is effective until April 23 unless amended. Over the next 30 days, residents are ordered to remain at home except to visit businesses considered to be essential needs.
Businesses that may remain open throughout the order include:
Health care operations and essential infrastructure and government functions
Grocery stores and other businesses selling household consumer products. This also includes pet stores and liquor stores
Businesses providing food, shelter and other services to the economically disadvantaged
Gas stations and auto supply or repair services, as well as emergency road services
Banks and other financial institutions
Hardware stores
Trades maintaining safety, sanitation and essential operation of homes and businesses
Child care facilities providing services to those who are still able to work, as long as children are cared for in groups smaller than 10
