The Eudora varsity basketball teams suffered double-digit losses at Basehor Tuesday night with the girls losing 40-54 and the boys losing 48-67.
The girls’ and boys’ teams started strong in the first quarter, but struggled with turnovers and scoring in the second half of their games.
The boys’ team was able to match Basehor-Linwood’s ability to score from three with their own offense in the paint in the first half.
Boys head coach Kyle Deterding enjoyed the consistent effort his team had throughout the game.
“I was really proud of how hard we competed,” Deterding said. “That’s the best we have competed all year.”
Basehor-Linwood was able to hit buzzer beating threes to end the first and second quarter. Turnover woes and Basehor Linwood’s shooting from beyond the arc blew the game open in the second half.
“In the third quarter, they turned up the pressure and that’s why they are really good,” Deterding said. “They turned up the pressure, forced turnovers and made a bunch of threes.”
The girls’ team started off the game strong with a 4-0 start and scored almost half of their points at the free-throw line with 16 made free throws. Harper Schreiner led the offense with 18 points and shot 10 for 10 from the free-throw line.
Eudora was down 20-29 by halftime as Basehor-Linwood took advantage of turnovers and the open looks they were getting. The buzzer beating theme continued for Basehor-Linwood as their girls team had their own buzzer beating three to end the third quarter as their lead ballooned to 18.
The Lady Cardinals were able to increase their defensive intensity and limit Basehor-Linwood’s open shots in the fourth quarter, but it was too late as they would go on to lose 40-54.
The girls and boys teams play at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. respectively Friday at Ottawa high school.
