A Eudora High School senior is one of two Kansas students chosen to participate in a U.S. Senate Youth program this spring.

Ben Posch will fly to Washington in March to participate in Washington Week as one of 104 students selected from across the country. Posch will have the opportunity to meet President Donald Trump, leaders from the U.S. Senate and others. He will also receive a scholarship from the Hearst Foundation, which helps sponsor the program.

“I’m really passionate about American history and civics. I really like government and public policy,” Posch said. “I’ve wanted to become a lawyer since I was 8.”

Posch reapplied for the program after receiving first runner-up last year. The application process included personal essays about his passions and future goals as well as a test over American history, government and current events.

Posch has also spent two years serving as the president of the Kansas chapter of Future Business Leaders of America.

He said his biggest motivators throughout high school have been his teachers, who continually push him and encourage him to get involved with opportunities. EHS business teacher Angie Brown, on the other hand, said Posch needs no motivator.

“Honestly, I don’t know that I’ve taught him much, as much as I’ve been here to facilitate and kind of just help him just get to where he needs to be,” Brown said. “He’s a once in a lifetime student. You don’t get a kid that is as motivated and does the work that he does and accomplishes the things that he accomplishes.”

Brown said she has no doubt Posch will succeed in anything he pursues in his future, and said when he becomes a politician someday, she will vote for him “no matter what.”

Following graduation, Posch said he is thinking about attending the University of Kansas to triple major in political science, international relations and finance. He described graduation in May as sentimental.

“The classes have been challenging, the students have been amazingly welcoming here and the teachers have just been truly inspiring,” Posch said. “I think Eudora just has a unique community that helps their students succeed in every opportunity they take advantage of.”
