Adorned in Thin Mint and Caramel deLite costumes, Girl Scout troop 4246 sold cookies from the Riverbend Apartments clubhouse Saturday.

Troop leader Sara Lorenz said her troop of 8- and 9-year-olds is close to passing its selling goal this year of 1,500 boxes of cookies.

Lorenz said along with troop goals, each girl sets a personal goal. She said goal setting along with communication and money handling are skills the girls gain from selling cookies.

Candice L’Ecuyer, mother of troop member Anna L’Ecuyer, said even though she always buys cookies from the preorder, she loves coming to the sales and seeing the girls interact with the community.

“You have to come and buy some,” Candice said. “I love to see their sales techniques and how they answer the odd-ball questions people ask.”

Anna said she set a goal of 2,000 boxes this year but laughed and said she didn’t get anywhere close. Lorenz’s daughter, Kamiella, said she is close to her 300 box goal with a total of 247 sold, and Rilie Pearson said she has sold 156 boxes, passing her goal of 150.

Lorenz said the 11 girls in her troop have yet to vote on what to do with the money raised from cookie sales. She said in the past they have camped in the polar bear enclosure at the Kansas City Zoo.

“They’re starting to be old enough to go camping this year,” Lorenz said. “They also donate part of the money to the animal shelter, and another part goes to funding their badges.”

Cookie season starts well before the boxes make their appearance. Lorenz said the girls start selling before they go on Christmas break and then she orders the cookies. She said they always order more cookies than what the girls presell to account for events like this Saturday. This year, Lorenz said she ordered 144 cases of cookies — at 12 boxes a case, that’s 1,728 boxes.

Troop 4246 only makes up a small part of the Girl Scout community in Eudora, which has troops for kindergarten through high school, Lorenz said.

Cookie season lasts until March 15. Troop 4246 will continue its sales at the 900 block of Massachusetts Street in Lawrence from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday as the girls sell Thin Mints, Tagalongs and other sugary pleasures.
