Eudora High School students will move to online learning until at least Nov. 24, a message to parents said Tuesday.
EHS has five active coronavirus cases, four of which were reported Monday or today, according to the district’s COVID-19 information webpage. One of these cases is a staff member and the other four are students. The most recently that an individual considered an active case was in the building was Thursday, Nov. 5.
“Please know that we are taking this action to protect the health and safety of our students, staff and families,” Superintendent Steve Splichal said in the message. “We recognize the timing of this adjustment creates a challenge for families. Over the coming days, we will communicate with you regarding our next steps with the intent to provide as much lead time as possible.”
This comes as Eudora sees a spike in cases, with a 16.3% positivity rate reported by Lawrence-Douglas County Public Health. With the current cases coming from the high school, the health department recommended the district move the school into remote learning to mitigate the spread.
During the closing, district staff will work to deep clean the facility. Students and staff are anticipated to return to in-person learning following Thanksgiving Break, Nov. 30.
The message also asked families to be diligent in keeping students isolated from each other for the time being to reduce community spread, in addition to following standard guidelines including wearing a mask, washing hands and staying home when sick.
“By doing these things, we stand a greater chance of breaking the cycle of transmission, allowing students to return to school,” the message said.
Eudora Elementary, Middle School and Early Childhood will continue in the current modified in-person model. Eudora High School will also host parent-teacher conferences as planned this week, and parents must wear a mask and practice social distancing while in the building.
