Eudora’s Halloween celebration will see major changes this year with the addition of new activities for children and adults.
Eudora Convention & Visitors Bureau members Elizabeth Knispel and Jenny Hellwig approached the City Commission Monday night to provide an update on the plans for this year’s Trunk or Treat event.
New activities include a petting zoo, bounce houses, a haunted maze, a pumpkin hunt, a balloon artist and a costume contest for the younger guests.
The event will also feature more adult-centered activities, such as a beer garden and local food trucks. The event is from 3 to 5 p.m. Oct. 26, with the new addition of continuing activities downtown afterward until 8 p.m.
The Eudora CVB has partnered with the Eudora's Parks and Recreation Department and the Chamber of Commerce to plan this event.
Knispel said the variety of new activities is intended to cater to both younger and older visitors so all members of families can enjoy what is happening downtown during the event.
"We are adding different items to attract different age groups," Knispel said. "Our goal is basically to keep people downtown longer."
The Eudora Public Library has approved plans for these festivities to take place on the library-owned lot at Ninth and Main Street.
The city has also approved street closures on Main Street for trunk-or-treating. There will be closures from Ninth Street to Seventh Street from 2 to 5 p.m. and from Ninth and Main Street to Elm from 2 to 9 p.m. during the event.
Knispel said reserving Main Street for the evening is a precaution for children participating in trunk-or-treating.
"We're basically requesting this for the safety of the kids," Knispel said. "I'm a business owner and a mom, so I understand both sides of it, but the safety of the child takes priority."
Because Main Street is a default truck route in Eudora, there will be an available detour for trucks while Main Street is closed for the event, Assistant City Manager Leslie Herring said.
