A fire at the home of Tim and Ami Bruce was contained thanks to passersby who reported smoke and flames from the back of the house Monday afternoon.

Fire crews arrived at the home at 1118 Cherry Street shortly after 3 p.m. and found the fire originated in a courtyard/patio area, according to a Eudora Fire Department incident report. There were no injuries.

The report noted $5,000 in property losses and cited abandoned or discarded materials or products as a factor in the fire. The Eudora Township Fire Department assisted with the call.

Tim Bruce is a city commissioner who owns Benchmark Construction. Ami Bruce is executive director of the Eudora Chamber of Commerce.

Mayor Tim Reazin said the community has offered an abundance of support to help the Bruce family and he is grateful that no one was injured in the fire.

“I’m so appreciative and impressed by the volunteers who acted quickly to stop the fire where they did," Reazin said. "I’ve seen many people in the community offer help to the family and those offerings are the true sense of Eudora."

Not only is he impressed by the work of the community volunteers, but Reazin said the Eudora Fire Department is also to thank for everything they have done.

"I know firsthand how devastating house fires can be to the family," Reazin said. "Fires are becoming less frequent here in town, but the Eudora Fire Department continues to impress me with their professionalism and dedication to training.”

Assistant City Manager Leslie Herring said the city of Eudora and the community are supporting the Bruce family.

"We have reached out to offer support and assistance to them but know that they are busy trying to piece things back together," Herring said. "I hear there has been an outpouring of community support for the family."

Eudora School District spokesman Mark Dodge said they are also providing support.

“Officer Lewis and Officer Ramirez assisted the family last night, was the word that I received," Dodge said. "Then we will be working with the family possibly through the Bird’s Nest to help them out. We’re wanting to do what we can, but we’re still in the early stages here.”

After stopping by and seeing the family on Tuesday, City Commissioner Ruth Hughs said they are doing well following Monday's events.

"They seem to be doing amazingly well," Hughs said. "They are filled with gratitude that no one was injured and to have such supportive community."
