Fire reported at Eudora home Monday

The Eudora Fire Department responded to a fire in a mobile home around 1:15 a.m. Monday.

The fire at 501 E. 10th St. was caused by an oven that “had an issue with it,” Fire Chief Ken Keiter said. Four people were inside the mobile home when the fire began, but no injuries were reported. Keiter said they were displaced shortly while the fire was put out and the smoke cleared from the home.

There was light damage to the home, mainly to the subfloor below where the oven was, Keiter said.

Firefighters left the scene after gas appliances were reignited in the home.

Daisy Bradshaw was inside the home with two of her children and her boyfriend, William Wilkerson, when the fire started. Wilkerson said they noticed smoke coming from the stove and tried to air out the room and spray water on the area, but the smoke persisted.

“It really was terrifying because we were trying to figure out how to get the kids out and grab whatever and what are we going to do,” Wilkerson said.

Wilkerson said they were appreciative of the quick response from the Eudora Fire Department and police despite snowy conditions, as well as the community for its support throughout what Bradshaw described as a hectic day.

The family is hoping to find a new gas stove for the house, especially with Christmas quickly approaching. Bradshaw also said the smell of smoke “seems impossible to get rid of” from the house.

“It’s super stressful, but overall, I’m just glad we caught it in time and I didn’t lose my house and that my kids are safe,” Bradshaw said.
