“It’s what we do in small town America”: EudoraFest adds cornhole tournament to benefit charity

EudoraFest event organizer Barbara Tuttle is ready for thousands of people to arrive in Eudora on Saturday for the annual event.

A new cornhole tournament will join returning favorites and more than 50 vendors at Saturday’s annual EudoraFest.

D-Dubs owner Travis Turner is hosting the tournament at his bar and grill at 10 W. Ninth St. Registration will begin at 10 a.m. and the competition will start at 11 a.m. It is $50 per team to enter with a 50/50 payout to the top four teams.

Turner hopes this event will bring in new people and help benefit the EudoraFest High School Seniors Scholarship Program and Children’s Mercy Hospital of Kansas City.

“It’s what we do in small town America, to bring people together and raise money for a good cause,” Turner said.

Before the cornhole tournament, EudoraFest’s opening ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. followed by multiple other events, such as the car show and annual Turtle Trot. More than 50 vendors will be on hand downtown to market their items, said EudoraFest event organizer Barbara Tuttle.

For her, the festival is an opportunity to give back to the community.

“To me, if we don’t bring people downtown, we won’t have a downtown,” she said.

Tuttle, who has spearheaded the festival since 2003, said EudoraFest is now part of who she is.

“It’s kind of like hosting a party and inviting 3,000 of your friends,” she said. “I like the atmosphere and the talent of making it happen.”

Other EudoraFest morning entertainment includes The Gary and Dani Show, a husband-wife duo offering a variety of music. Theatre Tech Productions, a variety show from Olathe that the event has booked for almost 20 years, will also be in the mix with stunt driving on a go-kart and stilt walking.

In the afternoon, KC Wolf will take a break from cheering on the Kansas City Chiefs to come to town and interact with event-goers. Waxin’ Grooves, a Lawrence-based band, will perform at noon.

For kids, EudoraFest will have games and an event called “Path to Pizza” sponsored by Gambino’s Pizza. In this game, participants receive a card at the fire truck and move around EudoraFest to find stamps to fill it. Once the card is full, kids can go to Gambino’s Pizza for a free personal pizza.

The pizza event is free for kids to enter, but other events like the Turtle Trot and car show have entry fees. Profits from EudoraFest go toward helping host the event again next year and to support Children’s Mercy Hospital. The event has donated $500 the past two years, Tuttle said.
