The Kansas Department of Health and Environment will replace nearly 600 doses of the Johnson & Johnson single-shot COVID-19 vaccine that were destroyed during a transfer in Douglas County.
Lawrence-Douglas County Public Health director Dan Patridge said Friday that the county will receive 600 doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
County health officials released Thursday 570 doses of the vaccine needed to be thrown away. Lawrence-Douglas County Public Health had housed the doses originally in a refrigerated state. LMH Health typically receives the vaccines in a frozen state and placed the vaccines back in a freezer during a transfer Wednesday, not realizing the shipment was already thawed.
“We are grateful for KDHE’s understanding and assistance in this matter as well as all the work of our Unified Command partners, LMH Health, Douglas County and the City of Lawrence, among others, as we continue to vaccinate as many eligible people in Douglas County as efficiently and quickly as we can,” Partridge said in a statement.
People who received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine this week and might have concerns were directed to contact their provider who administered the vaccine.
