Eudora city staff and commissioners gathered Tuesday to break ground on the Nottingham redevelopment project, officially beginning work on the Nottingham Center.
Next week, infrastructure improvements will begin, followed by installation of a traffic light at the corner of 15th and Church Street.
"It is a great day for the city of Eudora," City Manager Barack Matite said at the groundbreaking. "I think we will be transforming our community."
Members of the Eudora community also gathered at the future site of the Nottingham Center right off K-10 to hear city staff speak on the project’s progress.
Mayor Tim Reazin said he thinks the development will benefit the Eudora community for decades to come.
"We've had a vision for a long time," Reazin said. "Throughout this entire process, the commission has had the same long-term vision and goals, and I think everybody that's been a part of that on city staff have fallen right into line with that."
The first commercial occupant in the Nottingham Center will be a new Casey's General Store and the second will be a Wendy’s, both of which will be under construction into the spring of 2021.
The site plan for the Casey’s store was discussed at a previous City Commission meeting and can be found in the meeting's agenda.
The Eudora Times reached out to Casey’s headquarters, but did not receive more information about the new store as requested.
Matite said infrastructure work will begin next week to prepare the lots for the Casey's store, including installation of utilities, such as water and electric and beginning internal street work. Negotiations with potential tenants for other open lots in the Nottingham Center are underway.
"It's going to change what our community looks like," Matite said. "Having a groundbreaking for this project in this time in the midst of a pandemic speaks volumes. We're just going to build on this momentum. Given what we've accomplished thus far, I can only look at what's ahead and be hopeful."
