The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is investigating a Douglas County resident for potential exposure to the 2019 novel coronavirus.
The patient is in isolation at a local hospital and is not severely ill, according to a news release. The person has traveled from Wuhan City, China, where the outbreak began, in the past two weeks, and sought health care Monday after exhibiting symptoms in recent days.
The case is not confirmed. The Health Department is working with the Centers for Disease Control, LMH Health and the Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department to identify and contact those who may have been in contact with the person recently.
Symptoms of coronavirus include fever, cough, runny nose and trouble breathing, and are thought to appear around two weeks after exposure. At-risk individuals are those who have traveled to Wuhan City, China, recently or have been in close contact with someone who has coronavirus.
Health officials recommend washing hands consistently for at least 20 seconds, covering mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, and using alcohol-based hand sanitizer to avoid contracting coronavirus and other respiratory viruses such as the flu.
