Three new presumptive COVID-19 cases identified in Johnson County

BY SYDNEY HOOVER

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is confirming three presumptive-positive of the COVID-19 in Johnson County, increasing the number of positive cases in Kansas to four.

The results are being verified by a Center for Disease Control and Prevention lab, but will be treated as positive cases until determined otherwise.

The three people involved, all males, are believed to have contracted the virus in Florida while attending a conference. They did not become symptomatic until they returned home from Florida and are currently isolated. The health department said in a news release these cases are not linked to the other positive case in Johnson County.

“Right now, there is no community spread,” Health Department Secretary Lee Norman said in the news release. “The cases in Kansas are here because of transmission elsewhere. However, Kansas should remain vigilant. It’s important to live your lives, but it’s also important to take basic precautions like exercising good hygiene practices. It is up to each of us to do our part.”

The Health Department recommends citizens be cautious in attending large events, especially those over 60 or with weakened immune systems or chronic medical conditions. Anyone with fever, cough or shortness of breath who may have been in contact with someone with a positive case of COVID-19 should stay home and call a healthcare provider.
