Individuals at both Eudora Elementary and Eudora High School have tested positive for the coronavirus, administrators said in emails to parents Monday.

At Eudora Elementary, administrators said a staff member notified them of a positive test. The message did not specify if the staff member was a teacher or other school personnel.

The positive test at the high school was from a student.

Areas in the schools where the individuals spent frequent time were closed for disinfection. Lawrence Douglas County Public Health was also notified to work on next steps “necessary to protect the health of our students and staff,” the message from the high school said.

“We are closely monitoring this situation and will provide you with updates as we know more,” the message from Eudora Elementary said.

It is unclear when the last time the individuals were in the building and when the positive test results were received. District spokesman Mark Dodge said they have not been in the buildings since experiencing symptoms. The district is not accepting rapid testing results, so the tests would have been administered one to two days before the results were received.

The individuals will be required to quarantine for at least 10 days. The health department is working on contact tracing to notify those who were in contact with the individuals and will need to isolate, Dodge said.

Dodge said the district will continue following protocol provided by the health department, as well as practicing social distancing, wearing masks and taking other precautionary measures.

Students and staff members exhibiting flu-like symptoms should contact a school nurse or Lawrence-Douglas County Public Health, the messages said.

The Eudora School Board will meet again to reevaluate the current hybrid learning model and consider moving into another phase. Dodge said Superintendent Steve Splichal is consistently in communication with board members, including about the recent positive cases.
