Eudora residents have three seats to fill on the City Commission and an upcoming forum Thursday will provide voters with a chance to hear more about the candidates’ stances.
Contenders for the three seats are Tim Bruce, Ruth Hughs, Peter Latta, Roberta Lehmann and Rex Tedrow.
The Eudora City Commission Candidate Forum will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Meeting Room at City Hall. The forum is sponsored by USD 491 Eudora Schools, the Eudora Public Library and the Eudora/Douglas County Democrats. It is a nonpartisan forum.
"It's a public service event," event organizer Pennie von Achen said. "We try to get people involved in government and electing their officials."
Although the expected turnout for nonpartisan elections tends to be smaller, the results from these elections directly impact the community, von Achen said.
"In these local nonpartisan elections, these officials impact our lives so much in everything we do," she said.
The upcoming election will also allow voters to choose four members of the Eudora School Board. Candidates are Bryan Maring, Becky Plate, Lynn Reazin and Mark Chrislip.
School Board members and city commissioners serve four-year terms.
The ballot will also include a constitutional amendment question regarding including nonresident members of the military and nonresident university students in the census.
A sample ballot can be found on the Douglas County website. Eudora's precincts are 50, 52, 53 and 54.
Eudora residents can vote at their respective polling places from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Nov 5. Polling places include the Eudora Church of Christ, City Hall, Recreation Center and the Township Fire Station.
Voters must bring a valid form of photo identification, such as a driver's license, U.S. passport or state-issued ID card.
