Update 4:00 p.m. Monday:

The Eudora School District added five new active cases of the coronavirus Monday, bringing its total active cases right now to 19.

Two of those cases — a staff member and a student from Eudora Middle School — had not been in the district buildings since potentially being contagious. The other three include two Eudora High School students and one Eudora Elementary staff member. The elementary staff member had been in Eudora Elementary as recently as Monday, according to the district's COVID-19 Info Center.

As of Friday, Douglas County had reported 3,724 positive cases since March, 693 of which are currently active. The city of Eudora currently has a 14-day average positivity rate of 21.5%, the highest in the county. Douglas County as a whole has a 14-day average of 13.4%.

Original story:

A student at Eudora Elementary School has tested positive for the coronavirus, according to a release from the district.

This comes after the district added three new active cases over the weekend — two high school students and a staff member from West Resource Center. The newest confirmed case at EES brings the total active cases in the district to 16.

“The health and safety of our students and staff is our first priority,” Elementary Principal Susan Tinich said in the release Monday. “Per our established safety procedures, we will be taking the necessary steps to protect our school community.”

Eudora Elementary will close all areas the student had been in for deep cleaning and all individuals who have been in direct contact with the individual have been notified. Lawrence-Douglas County Public Health will continue contact tracing and notifying anyone else who may be considered a close contact.

It is unclear when the student was last in the building. The student will not be allowed back at school until he or she has been symptom free for 10 days and fever-free for 72 hours.

The Eudora School Board decided Thursday to move the elementary and middle school into the A/B hybrid model starting this Thursday, keeping Wednesday a remote learning day as originally scheduled. They will reevaluate how to return after Thanksgiving break.

Eudora High School, which currently accounts for 12 of the 16 active cases, will remain remote until after Thanksgiving, when the district will reevaluate the situation.

The board will reconvene Nov. 24 to determine next steps and discuss different hybrid models.
