Eudora Elementary School will close beginning tomorrow through at least Oct. 4, Superintendent Steve Splichal said in a message to families Thursday.
Two staff members at the school reported positive coronavirus tests earlier this week, and two more are currently waiting on test results. The school administration received guidance from Lawrence-Douglas County Public Health Thursday recommending the school close for the time being "as an effort to break the chain of transmission."
Pre-K through fifth grade will move to remote learning, and the Hybrid Youth Program Extension will also be canceled during the closure.
District spokesman Mark Dodge said the decision was made to combat the spread early and get students back in school as soon as possible. He said the district understands the closure will be difficult for families who need to find child care.
Dodge said the health department is conducting contact tracing.
Splichal asked families to isolate from each other as much as possible over the next week in the message. He also asked families to continue wearing masks, washing hands regularly and staying home if someone is exhibiting symptoms.
"Please know that we are taking this action to protect the health and safety of our students, staff, and families," Splichal said in the message. "We recognize the timing of this adjustment creates a challenge for families.
The Eudora School Board will meet tonight at 7 p.m. to evaluate keeping Eudora Middle School and Eudora High School in hybrid or to move into a different phase. Parents will host a demonstration beforehand at 6:30 calling for schools to return to in-person schooling.
