When Katie Lewis saw an article about “dinner on the driveway” in The Kansas City Star, she said she knew it was something Eudora should do.
On Sunday evening, Eudora families were invited to “eat dinner together” by sitting in their driveways to remain socially distant.
Lewis said she loved seeing so many families spending time together outside since the start of the Douglas County “Stay at Home” mandate. She said it makes her feel like people are going back to the older ways of socializing and caring about one another. Lewis said she’s loved all of the community events and interaction that have come out of the quarantine.
“It’s a great way for people to bond in ways they never have before,” Lewis said.
Aubrey Friedrich said she was excited about the event and invited her neighbors to join after she saw the post about it on Facebook. Friedrich said she doesn’t have a table to put outside but she and her family set a cooler and some camping chairs out to join.
“It’s bringing everyone together so they don’t feel isolated in a time of isolation,” Friedrich said.
Jessie Hamm said she also invited her neighbors to join in the event, although they joined from their back decks. Hamm said she’s only lived in Eudora for a couple of years but can tell it’s a tightly knit community. She said she’s been even more impressed with Eudora’s efforts to come together while having to stay physically apart.
“Eudora has done a really good job about keeping active in the community,” Hamm said. “I’m just really glad everyone is getting involved.”
